We honoured our dedicated volunteers with special afternoon tea events, celebrating those who have given years of service to our charity.

Held at both the Bicton and Apley sites, the events honoured more than 120 long-serving volunteers, celebrating milestones ranging from five to 30 years with certificates and commemorative badges. They also provided an opportunity to bring people together to reflect on their shared contribution, amounting to more than 1,040 years of service collectively.

Kim Turnbridge, Volunteer Manager, said: “This was a special opportunity to recognise the generosity of spirit our volunteers show every day. Our thanks go out to each and every one of them, as their support not only makes such a meaningful difference to our patients and families but also enables us direct funds to where they are needed most across the hospice. Their time and commitment have a lasting impact on the wider community we serve, and we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.”

Volunteers are at the heart of everything Severn Hospice does, from supporting patients and families on the wards to running busy retail shops and helping behind the scenes in administrative roles. Their stories highlight the profound difference volunteering makes – not only to the hospice, but to the individuals who give their time so generously.

Ralph Prince is celebrating 30 years as a volunteer

Ralph Prince is celebrating 30 years of volunteering with Severn Hospice, having supported the charity in a variety of roles over the decades. He began as a lottery collector, covering Stanton, Shawbury, Hadnall and Clive, and also spent 10 years volunteering in the Wem shop. Today, he can often be found selling raffle tickets at Refresh café.

Speaking about his motivation to volunteer, he said: “I first heard about the opportunities through local advertising and thought it would be a great way to give something back. It’s a great local charity, and I feel proud to support the work they do in the community.”

Volunteers celebrate their long service at Bicton Heath

Margaret Davies has been a friendly and familiar face on reception at the hospice in Bicton for the past 10 years. Her connection to Severn Hospice began when she attended the bereavement support group, where she formed close friendships that have lasted far beyond the sessions themselves.

Inspired by that sense of connection, Margaret decided to volunteer, helping to welcome visitors and patients to the hospice.

She said: “Volunteering here really does feel like being part of a community. I’ve met so many wonderful, like-minded people and made lasting friendships along the way – it’s such a warm and welcoming place to be.”

Ross Evans has volunteered in the Wellington Community Shop for 15 years. He said:
“I really enjoy talking to customers and helping to make the shop a welcoming space while keeping it looking its best. Volunteering in memory of my dad is especially important to me.”

In total, 1,107 volunteers support the charity, including 903 in retail and community roles, 151 in clerical positions and 53 supporting patient care. This year alone, 138 new volunteers have joined the teams, bringing fresh energy and commitment.
