We are celebrating the incredible contribution of our volunteers during Volunteers’ Week, including one special family where three generations volunteer side by side.
From 1 to 7 June, we are joining the UK-wide campaign recognising the vital role volunteers play in supporting charities and local communities.
Welcoming
Among those being celebrated this year are Abbie, her mum Shellie and nan Jean, who all volunteer together at our Wellington community shop.
What began as a college placement for Abbie soon became something much bigger.
“I came to the shop on a course from college and enjoyed it so much that my nan came in and asked if I could continue to volunteer because everyone in the shop was so nice,” said Abbie.
“I was made to feel so welcome that I wanted to stay. Then my nan stayed with me, and then my mum, who dropped us off, decided to join us too.”
Family
The trio now regularly volunteer together and say spending time with each other while helping the hospice has brought them even closer.
“We have a good laugh and it is fun,” said Abbie. “It is like I have two families, one at home and one at the shop. My mum and nan think the same.”
Abbie is also quick to praise her nan’s sorting skills. “My nan is the best. She knows all the brands and is a speedy lady. She gets loads of bags sorted and keeps everyone on their toes putting out stock.”
Abbie’s advice to anyone considering volunteering alongside family members is simple: “You really should do it. It is loads of fun and it makes your family grow bigger.”
Thank you
Volunteer Manager, Kim Tunbridge said volunteers are vital and are at the heart of the organisation.
“We’re so privileged to have so many wonderful volunteers who give their time and skills so generously,” she said.
“Volunteers’ Week is a special opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate every single person who supports our work. From our retail teams and gardeners to reception and administration volunteers and fundraising and event crew, they make an enormous difference every day.
“It’s especially wonderful to see young people like Abbie wanting to get involved. We welcome volunteers from the age of 14, alongside students completing college placements and participants in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
“Our volunteers bring warmth, kindness and compassion to everything they do and stories like Abbie, Shellie and Jean’s perfectly demonstrate the special community spirit that exists across the hospice.”
Rewarding
With more than 1,000 volunteers supporting us across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales, their contribution touches almost every area of our work.
