Duncan’s wife Bridget passed away in 2023 on our ward in Shrewsbury. In Duncan’s words, she had a ‘good death’.

He says buying a raffle ticket in support of our caring services is ‘a direct investment in dignity’.

Bridget died just two years after she was diagnosed with cancer.

But this was not the first time that Duncan had experienced bereavement: his first wife Victoria also died of cancer, but this time in a side room of a busy, clinical, overstretched hospital ward.

The comparison between hospice care and a hospital could not be starker, he says. Both had ‘exemplary’ care but while Bridget died surrounded by her family and with her dog Sparkle curled at her feet, in a light and airy room, Victoria died in pain and discomfort. The hospital did its best, but hospitals are not geared up for end-of-life care.

“Bridget’s care at the hospice was exceptional. She was never alone; I slept by her side, and she felt the late summer breeze blowing gently through the open doors of her room.

“I’m asking you to join me in supporting the hospice by buying a raffle ticket today.

“It’s not just a raffle ticket – it’s a direct investment in dignity, in humanity and in the kind of death we would all wish for our loved ones and for ourselves,” he adds.

Tickets cost £1 each, and there is a jackpot cash prize of £5,000 as well as 42 other cash prizes.

The closing date for ticket sales is 12 December 2025 and don’t forget you can buy them in our shops and in the receptions at our hospices in Telford and Shrewsbury too.

The winning numbers will be drawn on 19 December 2025 and will appear on our website. The lucky jackpot winner will get a call from our lottery team – so make sure to include your phone number.
