Tributes have been paid to our Vice-president and founding member Bill Watson who has died, aged 97.

Bill, from Shrewsbury, was also a soldier and one of the last surviving Commandos to take part in Operation Chariot, the WWII raid on French port Saint-Nazaire.

He helped the hospice in many different ways, working in both clinical and volunteering roles during his time with us.

Bill was honoured with an MBE for his services to us in 2002.

Our chief executive Heather Palin has paid tribute to him. She said: “Bill has been a true friend to the hospice from the very beginning.

“Not only was he part of our foundation, he was one of our first senior doctors.

“He continued to work tirelessly for the hospice, as a trustee and then as a volunteer driver and latterly as our Vice-president.

“It was a privilege to have known him and the hospice family will be forever grateful for his commitment to our cause.”

The Shropshire Star has compiled a tribute piece to Bill, including details of his incredible wartime exploits.
