Having spent their lives volunteering for charities around the country, John and Suzy finally settled in Shropshire.

And it is here that they help run the Ellesmere Community Support Group for us.

Along with a 12-strong committee of fellow volunteers, they organise a number of fundraising events throughout the year.

And while the COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to their plans, they have been calling on people in the local area to donate to us.

Generous

“We were to hold our Summer Luncheon in May but it was cancelled so instead we asked people to donate – we had some incredibly generous donations and made £1,600.

“We hold a variety of events through the year: a Bridge drive, a Valentine’s tea party and a Festive tea. Everybody just lends a hand and we are great friends so we all muck in together.

“The committee is great. We pull together and what needs to be done, gets done.

“The wonderful thing is that every time we ask someone to do something for us, to buy tickets or stage an event, they always say yes because they just want to help the hospice.”

Go-to lady

Suzy has been a member of the group for over 10 years and has held several roles including events secretary. She is the go-to lady when events need booking, tickets and posters need distributing, Hospice admin needs completing and raffle prizes need sorting – phew, that’s quite a list!

John has been a committee member for 25 years – more than 20 years ago he took on the role of chairman, which he held for three years. When the treasurer moved on, he took on that role and has done it ever since.

He manages the group’s finances and accounts and handles the proceeds of events.

Collaborating

The group have been talking with our shop in the town with a view to collaborating on future events.

“We had been planning to hold a fashion show, Emily from the shop was sorting the clothes and we had some great ideas. Because of Lockdown we have had to put a halt to that, but hopefully when things change, we will be able to start organising events again,” said Suzy.

Vital

Norma Ross, director of income generation said: “Volunteers like Suzy and John are vital to us. Their dedication and commitment really is second to none. They obviously love what they do, and their hard work, commitment and determination really does make a difference to our work.

“The Ellesmere group is just one example of our fundraising groups we have in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales.  These groups, and the volunteers who run them, are so important and we are so grateful to them for giving up their time to help us.”
