Support us

Our lottery raises £16 million towards care in 25 years!

When the National Lottery launched in 1995, we started Severn Hospice’s weekly lottery, with people all over Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales eagerly joining to support us.

As one of the first hospice charity draws in the UK, our lottery has now raised £15.7 million towards caring for families in 25 years.

More than 2,000 people are referred to us every year, with lottery players now contributing almost £1 million per year towards care for those families.

Making a big difference

Our lottery manager, Karen Swindells, tells us why she loves her job and why playing the lottery adds up to make such a big difference.

Karen decided to work for us because she wanted to do something worthwhile, saying: “I started working for the lottery in 2017 as I was drawn to the hospice after a family member received care and I saw the real difference it made.

“I like the people I work with and that we have a common goal raising as much as we can to provide care and support to families.

“It’s incredible to think how all those £1 lottery tickets have added up to almost £16 million – and what it means for those relying on us when they need it most.”

She says that people often join the lottery because they know and value the work we do, it’s the simplest way to support us and sometimes they know someone who has been touched by the hospice in some way. “We’re a local charity and people know where their money is going, they might know someone who has had our care, or even received help themselves,” says Karen.

Winning numbers

Karen added: “My favourite part of the job and the highlight of my week is ringing someone to tell them they’ve won our £2,000 top prize! I love to hear what they’ll do with their winnings and they often say they never played to win.”

A large proportion of supporters have been members for many years and are surprised when they receive Karen’s call. “I speak to a lot of stunned people and some think I’m a hoax caller; I always get asked if I’m joking and there can be lots of confusion.

“It’s lovely to give something back to the people who’ve supported us, a lot of members have been doing it for a long time and are very loyal so it’s nice to give them a surprise with something that can make a difference to them too.”

Winners spend their cash going on holiday, repairing their house, helping family members, paying bills, or saving it for a rainy day. Some even generously donate their winnings to us.

“A few weeks ago, someone donated the £2,000 jackpot to us, and we quite regularly have a few people giving £500 back. It’s completely unexpected but means so much.”

Play to win

As well as the £2,000 top prize, players can win second and third place prizes of £200 and £100, or 40 prizes of £10.

Every summer and winter we run special raffles with a top prize of £5,000 and if you’re already a weekly lottery member you’re automatically entered. And for something different, we even offer gift vouchers and wedding favours – all available online.

Karen adds: “It’s easy to get tickets and join – we’ve recently made improvements so it’s even simpler to sign up online in just a few clicks.”
