Although we have vacancies throughout many areas of the hospice, below are details of some of the roles where we currently have several opportunities available together with guidelines to give you an idea of what is involved.

Some roles will require a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure and mandatory training.

Current Opportunities

Please hold the line, caller … reception volunteers required

As a reception support volunteer, your role is to never keep our visitors or callers waiting.

Reception support volunteers provide a welcoming face to patients, carers and visitors to the hospice, working alongside the Receptionist and supporting them at busy times. This role also includes answering the phone, booking in visitors and selling cards and gifts.

Volunteers should have a calm, organised and confident persona with an excellent telephone manner. You will provide a warm friendly welcome to all visitors of the hospice and leave them with a positive lasting impression.

We are looking for one volunteer to join our volunteer reception team at Apley for the following session:

Monday – 09:00-13:00

In addition we need some extra volunteers to join our reception volunteer bank – you will not have a specific session but will be called up when volunteers have holidays or are ill. Flexibility is a must for this post.

Volunteer at our furniture store

Our first furniture store is on Ennerdale Road in Shrewsbury – and it needs your help.

Customer service assistant – help customers find what they are looking for and lend a hand with the day to day running of the shop. This role involves working on tills and handling cash.

Retail specialist volunteer (antiques, books, retro, vintage, furniture) – identify items which may be valuable or of special interest to our customers.

Driver’s mate/collection assistants – collection of donations for delivery to our store and delivery of purchases to customers. These roles include collection of large donations from our supporters.

Ward volunteers wanted in Shrewsbury

We have the following vacancies for ward volunteers in our Shrewsbury hospice:

Monday: Evening

Wednesday: Afternoon and evening

Friday: Evening

Saturday: Afternoon and evening (Four sessions in total)

Sunday: Afternoon and evening (Four sessions in total)


Ward volunteers are involved in non-nursing tasks, such as serving meals and drinks to patients, talking to patients, giving out water jugs, laying lunch and supper trays, using the dishwasher, preparing drinks for patients and their visitors, keeping the kitchen area clean and tidy, attending to the patients’ flowers, answering the telephones and responding to patients’ bells. If trained, our ward volunteers may feed selected patients.

Do you have green fingers? Fed up of looking after your own garden and want more of a challenge?

We have large, beautifully tended gardens which are cared for by a team of volunteers whose skills range from complete beginners to those with years of experience and very green fingers!

What do our gardening volunteers do?

Our volunteers support the contracted gardener to help achieve an area of beauty and peace for the enjoyment of patients, visitors and those attending the hospice.

Tasks undertaken by the volunteers include:

  • General gardening maintenance as requested.
  • Weeding beds
  • Watering as required
  • Deadheading flowers and shrubs
  • Pruning as directed
  • Lifting, dividing and cutting back herbaceous perennials as required
  • Planting out summer bedding and other plants as required
  • Mulching flower beds as required
  • Autumn leaf raking

At the moment we have vacancies on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at both Telford and Shrewsbury.
