Education

Education is seen as a central part of the work of Severn Hospice and there are close links between health care professionals and volunteer agencies within Shropshire and Mid Wales. The purpose built facilities at Severn Hospice Shrewsbury and Telford enable education initiatives to take place in a lecture room that is multi-adaptable to suit groups from 10 - 40, with in house catering facilities if required.

The Hospice has both a national and international profile, with Hospice staff presenting work at conferences and visiting places such as Sweden, Canada, Uruguay, India, Russia, Switzerland and the Czech Republic to teach about Hospice care. We offer structured placements to visiting medical and nursing staff from all over the world and locally too.

Study days and courses can be designed to suit the individual needs of an organisation and delivered either on site at the Hospice or alternative venue as appropriate.

Hospice education philosophy is characterised by a number of key statements.

  • Good value for money
  • Able to promote reflective practice and research awareness
  • Challenging and motivating to all
  • Conducted in a supportive environment
  • Sensitive to group and individual needs
  • Encouraging personal and professional development
  • Accessible to all (Health care professionals and associated carers [statutory, social and voluntary]

.

The issue of quality is vital to our teaching in palliative care and is met by our dynamic education respecting the above philosophy.
