Chaplaincy Department

The hospice has a non-religious foundation and its facilities are available for the use of all who need its services regardless of the religious or non-religious background of the individual.

The care team acknowledge the importance of the ‘spiritual’ dimension of patient need and aim to work with this area as an important part of its holistic approach.

This work is encouraged and led by the chaplaincy team.   The hospice has a full time Chaplain – Rev Harry Edwards and a part-time Assistant Chaplain Rev Denise Hewitson and they are assisted by a team of Voluntary Chaplains.

Chaplains are here to support and be available to help all patients: -

  • To talk through issues which may be worrying them.
  • To link them with a particular religious group of their choice, if requested, and to liaise with local clergy/ministers if that is the patients wish.
  • To lead services in the chapel and on the ward/day unit.

Services are open to everyone – patients, families, friends, staff – those of any denomination or none.

Information about services and time is always available from nursing staff.

THE HOSPICE CHAPEL IS AVAILABLE 24hrs TO ANYONE TO USE AS A PLACE OF QUIET AND REFLECTION.

As well as listening, talking, praying with people and leading Chapel Services, we also offer-

ANOINTING WITH OIL (blessed by the Bishop in the Cathedral)-for spiritual healing and strengthening.

BAPTISM & CONFIRMATION –can be discussed and arranged.

RECONCILIATION – an opportunity for anyone to confess their sins to God, and for the Priest to give the assurance of God’s forgiveness.

HELP AND SUPPORT IN ORGANISING OTHER SERVICES e.g. Weddings, Wedding blessings, Renewal of Marriage vows, Funerals (both religious and non-religious)
